Lodi, NJ — New Jersey’s first drive-thru cannabis dispensary opened for business Saturday.
It’s been less than four months since recreational marijuana was legalized in the state, and 17 recreational dispensaries have set up shop.
As CBS2’s Zinnia Maldonado reports, it’s a new way to consume cannabis.
“It was very convenient because they have a drive-thru and this is their opening day,” said one customer.
Later Soft launch a few weeks ago, New Jersey’s first pot dispensary is officially open for business. Available at the Apothecary on Route 17 in Lodi.
TerrAscend Corporation owns and operates an apothecary and two other dispensaries in New Jersey.
“Driver service is great,” said another customer.
“It makes it really quick and easy for them to pick up their order quickly,” said Chantelle Elsner, TerrAscend’s senior vice president of retail. “And then on the other hand, it gives, you know, patients who have mobility issues or patients who prefer to stay in their car a safer option.”
The driveway will be open to medical patients for the first two hours of each day from 9-11am.
“The state wanted to make sure medical patients didn’t have to wait in long lines for their medication,” said Jason Weil, executive director of TerrAscend.
Wild said it’s been a great experience working with state officials to launch cannabis sales.
“The tax dollars go to the state, they have a lot of programs that they have established that benefit from the tax dollars,” he said.
Tax revenue from the sale of recreational cannabis reached more than $4.5 million from April 21, when the market first opened, through the end of June. That’s based on sales from licensed retailers totaling nearly $80 million.
Durr predicts the three New Jersey locations will spend $40 million each in the first 12 months.
“It’s been coming up a lot,” Wild said. “We’re here for the long haul.”
