CannaHealthA medical cannabis certification company based in New Haven filed a lawsuit last week against the state Department of Consumer Protection and the Social Equity Council, which oversees Connecticut’s legalized adult-use recreational cannabis industry.
The company provides education to communities affected by program evaluations about medical marijuana and legal access.
The suit alleges that the state did not fully understand how much legal control Kebra Smith-Bolden, a nurse who founded the company, had over the business. She partnered with a Canadian investor. Earlier this year, to raise $3 million to cover the state’s cannabis grower licensing feeAccording to The New Haven Independent.
State inspectors rejected her application for a joint venture because the process is reserved for social justice applicants, which is disproportionately affected by the drug police.
Smith-Bolden’s attorneys said they disagreed with the finding. She also served on the Governor’s Committee on Social Equity, which helped establish the state’s cannabis regulatory process.
Regulators have yet to respond to the allegations.
