MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – As summer winds down, News 11 wanted to find out about the economic impact of the season on businesses in the Queen City.

Most businesses expect an increase in traffic to their stores or restaurants due to summer vacations and people visiting the area.

Bakery 900 and Mia’s Cafe in downtown Meridian are no exception.

Addie Fields, owner of Bakery 900, opened six weeks ago and offers fresh baked goods and bread to customers.

“Well, we’re known for our cinnamon rolls. It’s very, very common to be cinnamon rolls from Kansas. We couldn’t find any when we moved here, so I made cinnamon rolls for years, again taught by my dad. We’ve made some and shared them here with people we know. They became such a hit that we decided to make it a big deal here as well,” Fields said.

The owner says they strive to make their hours convenient for all customers.

“We definitely want to make sure our hours are with the hospital staff and our first responders going in and out of their shifts. We also have a lot of foot traffic from moms after the fall or when kids come in with grandparents in the summer, so our traffic has been great. We’re very blessed to be able to serve so much of the community,” he said. Fields.

Mia’s Caffe has been open for a little over a year and they say business has been good.

“So, during the summer months when everyone is out of school, we have a lot of people here during the day, especially on the weekends and all the events going on in town. The farmer’s market brings in a lot of customers while it’s around the corner. When we have festivals, that brings in a lot of business,” said Ezra Clay, who lives in the barn at Mia’s Cafe.

The Italian American-style restaurant wants to remind the community to always support local businesses.

“I think it’s one of the best things you can do to grow your community because our downtown businesses employ people downtown and give back to our community, and it’s a great way to keep your money in the local economy,” Clay said.

Mia’s Caffe has live bands every Friday and Saturday.

Both Bakery 900 and Mia’s Cafe are open different hours throughout the week.
