Health and wellness promotion has been reorganized in and after the Pat Walker Health Center.

Pat Walker Health Center’s Wellness and Health Promotion Department has moved into three separate departments within the Student Affairs Department. UARK Wellness is now part of University Recreation. The Sexual and Relationship Abuse Center is now a department in Student Life in the Dean of Students. And the Substance Education, Assessment and Recovery Program, formerly known as Substance Education and Alcohol Resources, will remain at Pat Walker Health Center.

University Health

UARK Wellness, although now housed in the University Recreation Department, is located on the second floor of the Pat Walker Health Center. UARK Wellness is a comprehensive program that promotes health and overall wellness by engaging and empowering students, faculty and staff through experienced academic and non-academic departments, training and support services and activities.

“UREC is excited to welcome UARK Wellness to our campus and formalize our long-standing partnership. Wellness programming will focus on campus outreach, education and classroom presentations, wellness training, and faculty and staff education and certification,” said Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Becky Todd. and Director General of UREC. “This organizational change will help strengthen the relationship between student affairs and academic departments to serve student physical health and well-being from a multidisciplinary approach.”

Sexual and Relationship Abuse Center

Now part of Student Life in the Dean of Students, the Sexual and Relationship Abuse Center is located in the Garland Center. The Center provides advocacy and education services to victims of sexual and relationship violence at no cost, and provides confidential information to make students a priority.

“SRVC grew out of the efforts and vision of PWHC, for which we will be forever grateful and move forward with a strong spirit of collaboration among us,” said Mary Wyndt-Hibbert, director of the Center for Sexual and Relationship Abuse. “Building on the strong foundation that has been established, SRVC’s transition to Student Life under the Office of the Dean of Students will provide additional opportunities to further address sexual and relationship issues on campus and, most importantly, to meet the needs of our students through confidential advocacy services and educational programs.”

Material education, assessment and recovery program

The substance abuse education, assessment and recovery program at Pat Walker Health Center is located in the same room as UARK Wellness on the second floor of Pat Walker Health Center. SEAR has changed some of the words associated with its acronym to highlight some of the valuable resources added to students seeking support or education from SEAR. The program now has a licensed professional mental health professional as program coordinator, a state of Arkansas licensed alcohol/drug evaluations and recovery specialist, and fosters a recovery community on campus.

“SEAR is excited to expand its services to include alcohol and drug assessments,” said SEAR Program Coordinator Jennifer Grimm. “Our future goals include more peer-to-peer outreach and education, expanded treatment services and an expanded recovery community.” It was important to remain part of PWHC so that we could have a central location for students to access all of their health care needs.
