R. Kelly’s former business manager — and co-defendant in the latest trial — is expected to stop Wednesday as the trial continues for a fourth week following a one-day delay at the Dirksen federal building due to an “operational issue.”
Darrell McDavid, who is accused with Kelly of coordinating witness payments and collecting sex tapes before the singer’s 2008 child pornography trial, will give “useful” testimony, the lawyers said.
McDavid is expected to spend a lot of time on the witness stand, accompanied by federal prosecutors as well as Kelly’s attorneys and co-defendant Milton “June” Brown, a former assistant to Kelly.
First, U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber is expected to hear arguments to quash the subpoena of former Sun Times reporter and music critic Jim Derogatis, who McDavid’s lawyers want to call as a witness.
In the year In 2000, Derogatis received a VHS tape of Kelly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl from an anonymous sender, which he turned over to authorities and became a key piece of evidence in Kelly’s 2008 trial. Derogatis, whose report was co-authored with Sun-Times reporter Abdon Palash, documented several allegations against Kelly that appeared to confirm rumors surrounding the singer in the early 2000s.
Witnesses testified that McDavid made payments to recover stolen videotapes of Kelly that showed the singer sexually assaulting an underage woman.
McDavid’s attorneys said he was acting as Kelly’s business manager.
Kelly’s trial was expected to resume Tuesday, but was delayed when U.S. District Court Clerk Thomas Bruton announced that a “business issue” at the Dirkson Federal Building would keep the court closed for an extra day after the holiday weekend. Officials later said the court would reopen on Wednesday.
The trial was expected to end this week, but due to the delay, it may now enter a fifth week.
Kelly, 55, was previously convicted in federal court in New York of child trafficking and fraud and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
