Sordo, who has more than 20 years of engineering experience in Formula 1, will join the team owned by Bobby Rahal, David Letterman and Mike Lanigan on October 1.

Sordo spent the last six seasons with McLaren Racing F1 as Head and Director of Vehicle Performance, and before that he spent 10 seasons with Red Bull Racing as Team Leader of Aero Performance, then Head of Aero Performance. Prior to that, Sordo enjoyed spells as a race engineer at RBR, then Scuderia Toro Rosso, Jaguar Racing and Arrows.

In a statement from RLL today, Sordo “will oversee a multi-level engineering structure at the group’s new headquarters in Zionsville, Indiana, which will emphasize various areas and lay the foundation for the group to achieve their goals.”

Sordo said of IndyCar: “I think it’s a very challenging and very competitive series where every competitor in the race has a chance to win, so you get all the elements right.”

“What’s exciting for me about this new role is to challenge myself and see if I can help the team move forward with the experience and methodology I’ve developed over many years in F1. It’s a clear challenge and a target I’ve set for myself and I’m looking forward to getting started.”

“I want to thank Bobby and Mike for this opportunity and for their faith in my abilities and I hope to repay them with success on the track.”

Rahal said: “I am delighted that Stefano is joining the team as technical director. He is highly respected in the industry and his track record of working with organizations such as McLaren and Red Bull in Formula 1 and others speaks for itself.

“I am confident that Stefano will bring an attitude that will raise our game against our competition and work well with our existing engineering staff.”

Added Langan: “Stefano has proven his ability to lead large teams of engineers at the highest level of motorsport and we couldn’t be happier to have him join our team.”

“His depth of experience, combined with his knowledge of the various areas of maximizing race car performance, will be a great asset to us moving forward.”
