PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has issued a public health advisory after confirming the presence of a blue-green algae bloom in Lake Pontosuc.

Pittsfield Public Health Director Andy Camby told Western Media News that recent tests of algae have resulted in cyanobacterial blooms, which pose serious health risks to people who come in contact with them.

Cyanobacteria normally found naturally in lakes and ponds in Massachusetts do not cause any harm, but warm weather and high concentrations of nutrients can produce blooms that can cause damage when it comes in contact with skin.

The flower can cause damage when water droplets are inhaled or swallowed during activities in water.

Cyanobacteria can cause:

  • Skin, eye and/or ear irritation
  • Stomach problems like vomiting and diarrhea
  • Muscle spasms
  • Nerve or liver problems (in severe cases)

Officials warned that pets could be at risk, especially if they wash contaminated water off their hair or hands.

Residents are urged to avoid water that looks green and smells bad. Dirt and/or film may be present on the water.

Officials have warned residents to avoid the following high-risk activities until further notice.

  • Swimming, swimming and/or diving
  • Drinking, allowing animals to drink from water
  • Water sports such as skiing, tubing and jet skiing
  • Fishing
  • Canoeing
  • Rowing
  • Sailing
  • Motor boat
  • Paddle boarding
  • Kayaking

Officials ask anyone who comes in contact with algae or contaminated water to call your health care provider or poison control at 1-800-222-1222. If your pet comes into contact with the water, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Anyone with questions about algae blooms can call the Pittsfield Health Department at 413-499-9411.
