[Lecanto, Fla.] – The Florida Department of Health in Citrus County (DOH-Citrus) urges parents to hold your young children during US Department of Transportation Child Passenger Safety Week on September 18-24, 2022.
Car accidents are the leading cause of death for children. In the year In 2020, more than 90 Florida children ages 0 to 14 died in vehicle crashes. Three of those are from Citrus County.
“Using properly installed car seats for every trip in the car is key to keeping children safe,” said Carmen Hernandez, DOH-Citrus Community Health Program Manager. “We know installing a car seat can be confusing. That’s why we provide car seat checks for parents, grandparents and other caregivers.
In February, nine local agencies completed training to be designated as National Child Occupant Safety Technicians by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This will allow DOH-Citrus to work with its partner agencies to ensure that child car seats are installed.
Safety inspections are by appointment only and can be scheduled by calling 352-513-6016. You should allow at least 30 minutes for the appointment.
