Gilead Foundation awards $20 million to organizations working to advance health through education equity

FOSTER CITY, Calif.–( BUSINESS WIRE )– Gilead Sciences, Inc. Launched to support innovative, high-impact strategies that advance health equity through education, the Possible Fund is focused on building a pipeline of Black health leaders. The work of these grantmakers aims to increase social connections for underserved students, improve the school and learning environment, and create support systems for student growth. Gilead has a broad and long-standing commitment to advancing global health equity, which it sees as critical to improving health outcomes for all. The company’s health equity strategy focuses on partnering with organizations that reach underrepresented communities.

“Through Gilead Foundation’s work, 13 organizations have been selected as national leaders, thinkers and changemakers in education, health and racial equity, adolescent mental health and social justice. Gilead Foundation President and Vice President, Public Affairs, Gilead Sciences. “We know that health inequities stem from larger structural inequities deeply embedded in our society, our laws, our economy, and especially our education system. With the help of leaders in education and health, we believe we have selected a group of innovators who can make a meaningful impact on health equity in society.”

Studies show that differences in education show differences in health. As a Report of the National Academies of Sciences, extensive studies indicate that access to education, the level of education a person has attained, and health indicators, including access to health care, life expectancy, and mortality from disease. Over the past 40 years, health disparities between people with high and low education have widened across all US regions.

Potential grantees are selected for their innovative and scalable approaches to addressing equity gaps in education and health for youth in the United States. 13 Possible Fund Opening Gifts:

“Thanks to the Gilead Foundation’s support to advance educational equity, more than a thousand students in New Orleans will have access to intensive pre-college STEM programs for the first time,” said Reynolds Verrett, president of Xavier University of Louisiana. “Creating an Endowment Fund will help develop and support a new generation of Xavierites who will continue our legacy of excellence as Black STEM leaders, healthcare providers and educators. At Xavier, we are blessed to educate future changemakers at all levels.

“Typically, a young scholar’s chances of success are largely the result of their connections with successful individuals,” says MD, President and Co-Founder, Persistence Pulse. “With the support of the Gilead Foundation, Pulse of Resilience can make a difference in mentoring by providing resources for the success of young people, fostering access and lasting relationships with strong Black health leaders. Creating a viable fund is one pillar of the Gilead Foundation’s vision of health equity for all. The Gilead Foundation contributes to the local communities where Gilead employees live and work, focusing on STEM education, social services and sustainability programs. The Gilead Foundation’s response to disaster and humanitarian efforts is an employee matching program that matches contributions by Gilead employees up to $15,000 to non-eligible nonprofit organizations.
