A Belfast public health nurse will receive a grant from United Midcoast Charities

Belfast, MEBelfast Public Health Nursing AssociationAfter more than 100 years of providing health care and other critical support services to the most disadvantaged and vulnerable members of society, he received an $8,000 grant from United Midcoast Charities (UMC).

The funds will be used for operational support.

The Belfast Public Health Nurses Association is a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization supported by Waldo County General HospitalThe City of Belfast, and the generous donations of local agencies and community members.

Among other things, the Belfast Public Health Nursing Association:

  • It works with local emergency management agencies and Waldo County General Hospital to respond to emergencies, including natural or man-made disasters, bioterrorism or disease outbreaks.
  • Communicable disease can be prevented by education, providing treatment, holding community vaccination clinics, and monitoring outbreaks.
  • It organizes blood drives, health screenings, blood pressure clinics and health fairs.
  • Educates the community on environmental issues such as lead levels, safe drinking water and pests.
  • It shares information with the community about various health issues such as obesity concerns, nutrition, stress reduction and the importance of exercise and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Works with schools on issues related to food insecurity and oral health care.
  • It connects people to the health services they need and ensures access to health care that is otherwise unavailable. All services are provided at no cost.

UMC’s open, competitive annual grant process supports nonprofit agencies working on food, housing, health and safety, and economic well-being in Knox and Waldo counties. Every dollar donated to UMC is applied to the grant program. In addition, UMC provides educational programs and other learning resources to all local nonprofit organizations, including those that do not receive funding.
