LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – In the spring, a thief hit an Isaac Park business near Durango and Sahara. The thief did not escape much; Two to three feet of copper pipe.

“Total damage, it’s going to be about $50,000,” Park said.

The dollar figure was so high because that piece of copper was a water pipe and it flooded the park’s business. The dollar amount includes lost business. The park had to be closed for two to three weeks for repairs.

Park owns Brighton Labs, which tests things like vitamins for customers and makes sure what’s on the label is what’s in the product. Park had insurance but was worried about the same thing happening again, so he improved the security around the lab building. Cameras are installed and the water pipe moves behind a locked metal box. In July, the cameras captured a man trying to enter the box. He cut the lock but could not get through the second lock. After the attempted theft, Park had the box locked for added security. He also released a flyer of surveillance videos to warn other thieves who are being watched by cameras. The man seen on camera was checking the utility boxes of other nearby businesses. Park said someone had already stolen copper wire from some cable boxes.

Park told FOX5 that he wants to warn other businesses about these types of crimes to take precautions to protect their assets.

“I don’t want to see any more victims in this area, in Las Vegas,” Park said.

Metro Police has a program to help businesses and homeowners protect their property. Metro says people can call their local command line to speak to a crime prevention specialist. That person can conduct an on-site inspection and make recommendations to help ward off thieves. There is no charge for that service.

Police are asking people to report any copper thefts. They say this will help them track where crimes are being committed. The department recently formed a copper theft task force made up of the Metro, Henderson and North Las Vegas police departments.
