HARTFORD – The Hispanic Health Council’s annual gala on Oct. 1 at the City of Hartford Atrium will feature a dinner performance of “Broadway Comes to Connecticut” during the event.
The gala will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. to raise funds for programs, including the health center. Although planning for the health center is in the early stages, the idea is to incorporate a mix of science and art.
Workers from local businesses provide lighting for the gala.
Freddy Ramirez is executive producer and director of the Gala’s artistic department. When asked to take on the role at the Hispanic Health Council, Ramirez immediately thought about doing something different, he said.
Galas are primarily about eating, listening to speakers and awards, but Ramirez wants people to enjoy the event, so he suggested including a musical.
The show
“Broadway Comes to Connecticut” is inspired by “West Side Story” – a play and film that explores the rivalry between teenage gangs and love. Ramirez said all the music at the gala will be from “West Side Story.” The musical will be interactive and throughout the show there will be pop-up shows that will keep the audience in awe.
Producers and performers
According to Ramirez, many of the dancers are from Broadway or the 2021 film West Side Story. All members of the production, including the cast, are Latino. Dancers from Connecticut and Massachusetts will also perform at the event. Emily Barella and John Ververis will lead live singing during the event. Actress, singer and dancer Ana Isabel Acevedo Aviles, who starred as Rosalia in the movie West Side Story, will attend the gala. During the event, she will receive an award.
Lighting and music
Ramirez said the event included more than 150 lighting effects. Angel De Paz, who runs the Silver City Ballroom on Colony Street in Meriden, will be in charge of lighting at the gala. De Paz and his team from Meriden will install LED lights, which will change the color of the interior walls of the building.
“We are very excited,” De Paz said.
He mentioned that the event was the opportunity he and his team had been waiting for to showcase their talents and skills. De Paz oversees the arrangement of speakers and background music.
