A new YouTube series covering Italian fashion from A to Z – WWD

Filming Italian Fashion: As she prepares for her first video series, “Italian Fashion from A to Z,” filmmaker Grazia D’Annunzio wants viewers to remember that fashion is serious, not frivolous.

Produced by Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo at New York University, the series features videos dedicated to famous Italian designers and brands. It also highlights the origin of Made in Italy, looking at pioneers and new talents. Starting Tuesday, a new episode will be released every Tuesday on YouTube and the Casa Italiana website.

D’Annunzio, a professor of journalism at the Universidad Statale di Milano, created the idea for a “simple dictionary of fashion” for students and people interested in fashion. In 2020, she began working on it when the pandemic hit. “Fashion is a living thing, so it took me two years to complete it. Sometimes you have to clean and update everything. We hope that everything will be fine until January. We will see if we have to change anything after the new year,” she said. D’Annunzio will have a series of discussions with the director of Casa Italiana, Stefano Albertini, in a special event on Monday night.

Alphabetizing Italian fashion was no easy task considering the challenge of the letters “X”, “W” and “Z”. Each letter is associated with an adjective associated with a designer or group of designers, with the aim of presenting the main Italian designers, the forgotten but important ones and founders of Italian fashion of the 20th and 21st centuries. Armani, Versace, Prada, Ferre, Dolce & Gabbana, Max Mara and all the big names are cut.

“But you can’t forget that Italian fashion started,” says the filmmaker. “It didn’t even start with Armani, Missoni or Walter Albini. He was in Florence in the early 1950s. Considered the founder of Italian fashion, Giovanni Battista Giorgini, an aristocrat and Italian entrepreneur, a group of Italian designers – Emilio Pucci, the little-known German Maruselli and others – showed in Florence.

Each show in the A to Z series is three to 15 minutes long and allows students to showcase the beauty and talent of Italian design in a variety of ways.

“Italy is known for great craftsmanship, great attention to detail and high quality. All the designers I feature are renowned for their exquisite taste, great fabrics, embroidery and craftsmanship,” said D’Annunzio.

While the YouTube series is good to go, D’Annunzio is working on a book in Italian about fashion and film and continues to teach in Milan. She is also working on a conference with a colleague from the University of Bologna on Italian fashion in America that will begin next fall with international scholars for the first time.

“Italian fashion is growing a lot with young designers who are very Gen Z,” she said.

Along with Italian designers in part, New York-based D’Annunzio said she also wears Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and other American designers. “Living here in New York, you have to have a ‘metropolitan look.’ “When I came here in the ’90s, Calvin, Donna, Ralph and Isaac Mizrahi were so hot, so having a piece of that made me feel like – not like – but part of a bigger community,” she said. But I love Italian fashion, yes.
