49ers faithful: Preseason opener is fun for fans, good for business.

“Man, this is more important than regular games. We’ve got to see who it is. And we’ve got to see what they can do now,” said fan Jeff Martin, who drove into the game from Modesto. Added Sandra Smith of the tailback, “I’m happy with what we got. Our offense, our defense. We’re going to do it.”
Experts say all this activity is bolstering the local economy struggling to contain Covid-19 and the seemingly endless pandemic.
“People are going out. They’re enjoying themselves, they’re having a good time. But economically, they’re spending money,” said Christian Malesich, CEO and president of the Silicon Valley Central Chamber of Commerce.
Many local businesses report a similar sales problem, as the Niners bring in customers when they play in town.
“Every single game with the 49ers, we’re always busy,” said Kevin Egong, who is at the Chicken Meets Rice restaurant not far from the stadium. Even if there is no game we have a lot of command, if there is a game there is a big command.
That economic philanthropy extends to local hotels, Malesic says.
“Some people are coming from out of town. So they’re enjoying our entertainment and other entertainment. So they help all the businesses in the area,” he said.

El Ray Williams and his girlfriend Tesha moved to Santa Clara from Studio City and Las Vegas respectively. They said they were both wearing Green Bay Packers jerseys and sitting at sidewalk tables enjoying the atmosphere. Asked about the Packers’ recent setbacks in beating San Francisco, he said, “It’s good. We’re all at ground zero now. It only takes one punch.”
Apparently, a gauntlet has been thrown at the beginning of the pre-season, and tens of thousands of faithful are ready to respond to the call, as football finally returns.
“When you’re honest, you get from start to finish. And here we are at the beginning,” said Sean Allen, a 49ers fan who drove into town from Oroville, CA.
