EAST MOLINE, Ill. (KWQC) – Over the weekend, a Quad City painting business launched a new initiative that will put a face to veterans’ wealth.

At a time when many community organizations are still struggling to recover from the epidemic, Seamless Finishing has decided to “paint forward” at the East Moline VFW.

VFW Post 8990 bookkeeper and assistant treasurer and secretary Diana Soliz reached out to the business earlier this year to get a quote to paint the exterior of the building. That’s when the company first realized the nonprofit’s Paint it Forward project was a great candidate.

“We left saying we couldn’t believe the change,” Soliz said. “We had people stop at the corner to look at us. We had people driving around the building. It’s shocking. It sounds great.”

Due to covid, the post was closed and reopened only for more than a year. Commander Arthur Munoz said the outbreak also halted many reforms.

“If you have an ugly building, the perception might not be as positive as when you have a nice clean building,” Munoz said. “You may have a different perspective on being able to get the help you need.”

In two and a half days, the artists were able to complete the work, all free of charge. Owner Brandon Dero said he wants to be a part of the community.

“Ever since I started my company, this is something I’ve always, you know, wanted to do,” Dero said. Owning a new business that doesn’t have .. in the first couple of years. We have been here for three years and we are trying to do something for the community.

Lead artist Mike McCancey said the quick work is worth it, especially if they’re helping veterans.

“It’s a drastic change,” McKenzie said. “It’s just to motivate everyone. Free food obviously makes them happy.

Given the work the VFW does, Munoz hopes this paint job will help continue the group’s legacy in the community.

“The goal is to continue,” Munoz said. “To keep this building going, this heritage and the VFW will continue to be a vital part of our … community.”

Now, aside from the paint job, next on the list of improvements for the VFW includes a landscaped parking lot and a new accessibility ramp to enter the building.

According to the organizers, Flawless Finish already has a list of partners and recipients for next year. They hope to donate a repainted exterior in October.
