Alvernia homecoming and family weekend event to raise awareness

Sunday, October 9, You matter movement and the Alvernia Active Minds Chapter They are teaming up to host the “Move Your Cause: Mental Health Awareness Walk” from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Student Center on the campus of Alvernia University. Homecoming and Family Weekend.

“Hosting the Alvernia Mental Health Awareness Walk and being the first of its kind means a lot to me. My goal with my business is to bring people together, remind people that they matter and raise awareness for mental health,” said S. Max said. Horne, Alvernia alum, MBA student and founder of You Matter Movement, LLC. “Being a student entrepreneur at Alvernia has given me the confidence to be successful at events like this and to communicate internally and externally as active minds.”

Participants can. Pre-registration Register for the event or on the day of the event starting at 11:00 a.m. The walk is a total of 2 miles and participants can complete at their own pace. The event will feature community presenters, educational information about mental health, live music and other activities.

“We’re thrilled that Max decided to host the walk during Homecoming and Family Weekend. He’s a proud and active young man, and we’re excited to work with him on this project,” said Daniel Hartman, director of outdoor engagement. Alvernia University Athletics Hall of Fame and Bingo Ceremony.

The Your Matters movement aims to break the mental health stigma, focusing on education, resources and community for college-age students. Partnering with educational institutions to develop online resources and safe spaces to meet the needs of students is critical to providing the necessary support systems and peer relationships so they know they are not alone.

“Student organization Active Mind and [Horn’s] Your cause movement is a wonderful partnership. Together, we have the same goal of breaking the stigma around mental health.” said Victoria Mack, president of the Alvernia Active Minds chapter. “Mental health is not talked about enough in society, let alone in college settings. On both platforms, we are working hard to expand this topic. This is just the beginning, and I’m excited to see how this stigma is broken at Alvernia University.

Active Minds is a leading non-profit organization that empowers students to speak openly about mental health to educate others and encourage help-seeking. By organizing and supporting student-led mental health awareness, education and advocacy group chapters nationwide, the nonprofit organization works to increase students’ awareness of mental health issues, provide information and resources about mental health and mental illness, and empower students. To seek immediate help as needed and to serve as a liaison between students and the mental health community.
