Fourteen community health workers in the Birmingham area have graduated from the newly launched Path to Wellness initiative.
The graduation in Innovation Depot It was the culmination of a four-month program aimed at moving participants into living wage jobs in the health care community in Birmingham.
The way to health is motivation. ProsperA Birmingham-based coalition of community, civic and business leaders committed to creating a more vibrant, racially and gender-inclusive economy. Alabama Power CEO Mark Crosswhite is chairman of Prosper’s board of directors.
It has partnered with healthcare employers including Prosper. UAB, Cooper Green hospital, Viva health, Raise your hand, Relationship health And Live HealthSmart Alabama Community Health Worker pilot program to begin in April. In further partnership with Create Birmingham, ThinkData solutions And HealthOpXWith the mission of working to build a healthier community, the Fit for Health program offers unemployed or underemployed people a way to earn while learning and serving the community.
“The program is designed to best support participants,” said Denita Bearden, director of operations for Innovate Birmingham. We understand that there are obstacles in our community that we need to overcome to truly give ourselves a chance at success.
Pathway to Health Community Health Workers receive a $500 training stipend and $500 upon completion. They also get an $18-an-hour wage, monthly health insurance, free digital skills training and professional development. Additional benefits include interviews with willing employers and career training.
“Participants are able to receive direct financial assistance for expenses such as rent, child care and utilities when we work part-time with our employer partners,” Bearden said. “Helping in these areas allowed them to focus on completing other program requirements without worrying about how to pay their bills.”
Permanent career advancement opportunities for many graduates are announced at graduation.
“Meeting new people, networking, learning new concepts and being able to implement community health work during the program and the experience I have will last forever are priceless!” Karis Steele, a Wellness Street graduate, said.
Prosper Initiative Director D Manyama said: “Healthy Road is helping to bridge the gaps in health, wealth and wholeness in our communities. “We hope to lift not only our neighbors, but participants to better opportunities for themselves and their families.”
