Security is a top priority for Amazon Web Services’ national security team ⏤ and the defense and intelligence communities seek the best in technology to stay ahead of adversaries.
That’s according to Ash Takei, senior manager of advanced programs and military intelligence for Amazon Web Services’ national security group.
Thankey oversees AWS’s relationship with the Armed Services, the National Security Agency and the US Cyber Command. He recently joined WashingtonExec’s Intelligence Council, so we caught up to discuss top NatSec trends and AWS’s place in the national security market.
What trends are you seeing in the NatSec and Intelligence Community?
IC is truly blazing a trail in the cloud, and serving as a model for other government agencies. IC is proving to other departments that it is possible to innovate safely and move quickly.
Organizations of all shapes and sizes are reaping the benefits of the business cloud, and at AWS we’re constantly appreciating the new ways we see our customers taking advantage of the many benefits the cloud has to offer. There are many trends we see across different verticals and customer segments, as customers increasingly migrate workloads and embrace new innovations and emerging technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence and IoT.
As for our defense and IC customers, we expect to see this group continue to move up the stack. When AWS started its public sector operations, potential government sector customers were mainly attracted to the cloud for two reasons: to save money and promote efficiency in hosting websites on the cloud and using cloud storage.
In just a few years, agencies are looking to the cloud to leverage especially critical missions like quantum ⏤ innovation, high-performance computing, and emerging capabilities for machine learning and artificial intelligence insights.

What excites you about joining the Washington Executive Intelligence Council?
I am excited to have this opportunity to serve on the Washington Exec Intelligence Council and represent AWS. My involvement will allow me to further connect with our partners and customers in the intelligence community, and give me the opportunity to share AWS insights and experience in supporting the national security mission.
