There was plenty of holiday cheer in Lubbock on Saturday as the Texas Tech Red Raiders moved to 2-0 after a thrilling 33-30 double overtime win over the No. 25 Houston Cougars.
Some like to celebrate with a cold beer, including Tech coach Joey McGuire, who he says he likes to drink every now and then.
But the loud and proud Texas Tech student body celebrated with beer cans and water bottles thrown onto the field in the second quarter, as the Red Raiders took a 17-3 lead before halftime.
“They’re not 100 percent sure it was a Tech fan,” Tech senior associate athletic director Robert Giovanetti said, but debris is certainly flying from the student section.
“That was before halftime,” McGuire said, “so they came on at halftime and the back referee said, ‘Man, I almost hit.’ He almost got hit.
McGuire made light of the situation, but was determined to get the point across as it was unacceptable to throw cans on the field of play that could injure players and officials or at the same time result in a 15-yard penalty against the hometown Red Raiders.
“What really confuses me is the beer bottles that are thrown on the field,” he said.
But I think it’s important to understand that (fans) are part of ‘Don’t beat yourself up.’ Our fans have a huge influence on the game and the love we play, and the worst thing that can happen in games – where we still have five at home – is that we get punished for something like that. As far as ‘don’t beat yourself up’ it’s the worst. “
One of Tech’s traditions of light-hearted celebrations is watching fans harmlessly throw torches onto the field during big games. McGuire is all for it, but he wants fans to make sure they’re upholding traditions by doing the right thing.
“It’s very important to preserve all the traditions of Texas Tech,” McGuire said. “It’s not part of our culture to throw water bottles and beer bottles on the field. I want to make sure we do the right thing when it comes to that.”
The Red Raiders get their first road action Saturday against the No. 16 NC State Wolfpack as Tech looks for back-to-back wins.
And when McGuire and his team return to Lubbock and Jones AT&T Stadium on Sept. 24 against the Texas Longhorns to open the Big 12, maybe things will settle down when it comes to beer-tossing Easter.
