- “There is more interest in Russia now that Putin is killing civilians in Ukraine,” he said.
Financier Bill Browder, one of Vladimir Putin’s most vocal critics, now receives regular calls from US and UK government ministers and officials after Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year.
He told the “One Decision” podcast that before Putin’s invasion, he had been unable to meet with UK politicians, but now he is “door-to-door swinging in different places with people wanting to talk to me.”
“Suddenly I’m getting calls from cabinet ministers, asking for advice – and it’s not just the British government,” Browder said.
They were also met by the governments of the United States and Canada: “Of course there is more interest because everyone can watch on television when innocent people are being destroyed and children are being killed.”
“Everybody understands that this comes from Putin’s criminal activities, and a large part of his criminal activity is stealing money and a large part of that stolen money goes into our economy in the West,” Browder added.
Browder founded Hermitage Capital Management in 1996, which quickly became one of the world’s best-performing funds. He has spent much of the past two decades building up a long list of enemies, including Putin, in his efforts to expose corruption in post-Soviet Russia among oligarchs and their companies.
In the year Browder, who was designated a national security threat to Russia in 2005 and banned from entering the country, was named in a July 2018 press conference by Putin and then-President Donald Trump after a meeting in Helsinki.
The Atlantic Council said that Browder’s business partners, both in Russia and in the United States, never paid any taxes in Russia in excess of $1.5 billion.
Browder’s lawyer Sergei Magnitsky He died mysteriously in a Russian prison in 2009.
In the podcast episode, Browder said he has been on Interpol’s red notice list eight times, which is issued to people wanted for prosecution or jail time.
Speaking about the system, he said: “I think we are reaching a stage where a new Interpol will be established, which includes countries with fair rule of law.”
Browder said they want Putin dead for a while. “The main way he wanted to kill me was not by putting Novichok in the door lock — or maybe he wanted to but decided not to,” Browder said. But the main way he wanted to kill me was to bring me back to Russia internationally legally and then kill me in a Russian prison.
When he concluded his speech, “That was his goal. The way he went was by issuing an Interpol arrest warrant.”
