ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46) — Black-owned businesses are being celebrated across the country during Black Business Month.

Dionne Fraser-Carter is a black business owner in Atlanta.

Zina opened Artistic Retail, Boutique and Gallery on Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard in 2017.

Fraser-Carter says of her business, “Painting artists, fashion designers, jewelry, everything in the creative genre, handmade original works.”

Entrepreneurship is love, she told CBS46, but like any other business, she struggles.

But as a black-owned business, Fraser-Carter said it was extremely important to keep going and encourage other black entrepreneurs to do the same.

“The number one challenge for many black entrepreneurs is the lack of access to capital,” she said.

This month Fraser-Carter is celebrating Black Business Month.

“Black businesses are important because they build communities,” she said. “When black businesses can stand strong, we really change the landscape.”

According to the US Census Bureau, the number of black-owned businesses in the US grew from 2017 to 2019.

In the year In 2019, there were nearly 134,000 black-owned employer businesses, an 8 percent increase from 2018, according to that data.

Fraser-Carter said the community has stepped up to help businesses since the outbreak, and she hopes the trend continues.

“People can come in and shop, be intentional about where they spend their dollars,” she says.
