Fourteen of Nebraska’s 93 counties do not have a primary care physician, and such statistics prompted District Six Administrator Paul Kenney of Central Nebraska to support the complex.

“In my five-and-a-half years, I’ve never had a title with so many people on one line,” said Kenney, whose hometown is 15 miles northwest of Kearney.

Construction on the Rural Health Complex, which will begin in September 2023, will expand the college’s existing health care programs and open the door to the addition of the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy and Public Health.

UNK and UNMC previously built the Health Sciences Education Complex in Kearney seven years ago as the first phase of expanding access to health care in rural parts of the state.

“The addition of UNK’s second health sciences-focused building will create opportunities for students who want to pursue their health careers closer to home – helping us build a strong rural workforce, increase access to rural care and help communities thrive,” University of Nebraska Medical Center Chancellor Jeffrey Gold said in a statement. “In short, it will change lives for generations,” they said.

With Thursday’s approval, the universities estimate the health center will be completed by the summer of 2025.
