NACOGDOCHES, Texas (East Texas Weekend) – Paul Murray is one of the brewery partners at Fredonia Brewery in Nacogdoches. He said it’s been a tough time since the outbreak forced public places like his business to close their doors for more than five months.

One of the first things the brewery faced was a shortage of cans. Murray also noted that the cost of materials and shipping caused a domino effect, allowing them to identify the best solutions. “This really affects the bottom line of whether you’re trying to make a product and sell it at a wholesale or retail price. Like these kinds of controversies. It was a rollercoaster.”

Murray said their decision is holding back widespread distribution until the future.

Breweries across the country are experiencing a lack of carbon dioxide. Murray explains that CO2 is a byproduct of fermentation to create beer; The system is expensive and used by large breweries.

The Fredonia brewery currently relies on CO2 bottling and luckily they haven’t experienced a shortage yet, but they say they are ready if it comes to their location. “It all comes down to it, and I mean it’s unfortunate, because it’s all in the consumer’s lap to make that choice. That’s not just for us as a brewery, but for a lot of small businesses,” Murray said.

They said that in the past, price increases from their suppliers would occur on a predictable schedule, but now they are experiencing price increases on a monthly or even weekly basis. The brewery’s prices have risen to keep up with inflation.

According to Murray, as a manufacturer, they are dependent on other goods to produce their products and sell their products. “It’s a tough time for all of us and we’re really grateful to everyone who’s been supporting us through this and hopefully we’ll all weather the storm and come out the other side and have some beers.”
