Top business schools in the United States hired 239 new professors this year, the most since 2018.

For Sa-kiera TJ Hudson, Berkeley is where she was always meant to be — even if her first visit didn’t go as planned.

Hudson joined the faculty at UC-Berkeley’s Haas School of Business this fall. She teaches the school’s core Diversity, Equity and Inclusion course in the spring. But in the year She spent a formative summer at UC-Berkeley studying cultural psychology in 2010 as an undergraduate at Williams College before earning a PhD in social psychology from Harvard in 2020.

At least she was That is. To study cultural psychology. The summer did not start well when the counselor went to China not long after they met, he would not return. But with a bit of luck, a graduate coordinator gave her some articles on power dynamics that changed the course of her career.

“I wanted to do a thesis in psychology when I read about intergroup relations,” Hudson says. Poets&Quants. “Reading those two texts at the same time made me realize that when psychologists and other people talk about identity, they try to talk about it from a cultural perspective. We can talk about attitudes, the different ways people see the world, etc. – but the ways people with marginalized identities think and show and act are very similar to people with low power. It made me realize that identity is an example of hierarchy. Race and gender and religion are examples of power hierarchies. And for the rest of my life I wanted to study that: the psychological processes involved in the formation, maintenance and communication of hierarchies.

“I certainly haven’t stopped studying that.”

239 new faculty at top 26 US B-schools this fall

Berkeley Haas Dr. Sa-Kiera Tiarra Jolene Hudson

Hudson is one of 239 professors and instructors teaching MBA classes at new schools this year, up nearly 50 from 2021 and up from 2018. For 147 of them – 61.5% – it was their first time teaching MBAs.

The number of faculty hires made by high schools has fluctuated greatly over the years, seemingly unaffected by larger forces such as epidemics and recessions. In 2016 Poets&Quants They counted 143 new professors — from full professors to visiting professors — at the top 20 schools. In 2017, this number increased to 198 in 24 schools. The following year, 2018, there were an incredible 277 hires at the top 27 schools, incl. P&Q‘s top 25. Among them, 168 full-time teaching jobs in their first career, or 65%, increased from last year’s total of 57%. In the year In 2019, there were 198 total new professors at the top 25 schools, including 135 – 68%, more than two-thirds – for whom the new job was their first job teaching MBAs.

Then, by the end of 2020, when most classes are virtual, 181 professors, teachers, lecturers and other new faces have joined 25 top-ranked US B-schools. At the time of the outbreak, of those 181 new hires, 62% were new to the class, either newly graduated PhDs or from the corporate/startup world. Sixty-nine total professors had prior MBA teaching experience.

Last year brought us. In the year In 2021, as the world begins to emerge from the pandemic, 190 new and visiting professors have joined 26 top business schools in the United States. One hundred and twenty new hires, or 63%, were in their first teaching position; The 70’s were well aware of the rigors of the MBA class.

Management is again the top discipline of new hires.

In the year In 2021, Harvard Business School led all B-schools with 30 new hires. After HBS, Chicago Booth follows at 21, USC’s Marshall School at 16 and Stanford GSB at 15. No other school this year is as close to hiring as HBS is in 2021. Stanford leads all schools with 21 hires, Booth is second with 18, USC again hired 16 new faculty, and Columbia Business School and HBS each had 14. Overall this year, 26 of the top 11 schools reported double-digit teacher hires.

In the year In 2021, only one school, Michigan’s Ross School of Business, has no new hires. Every school has hired at least one new faculty member this year — and in the Ross School’s case, exactly one: Ruslan Momot, a professor of technology and operations who earned his doctorate and master of science in technology and operations management from INSEAD and came to Ross from Northwestern’s Kellogg.

The most represented discipline in 2021 is management, with 32 teachers in the field, followed by finance (29), marketing (19), accounting (18), operations (18), strategy (15), entrepreneurship (11) and economics (nine). In the year By 2022, the discipline will have some form or reference to management, 45 in finance, 35 in marketing, 27 in economics, 25 in operations, 18 in accounting and 17 in strategy, with 60 professors or instructors. Twelve are in entrepreneurship, and nine in organizational behavior.

‘Let’s make sure the weather is good for everyone’

Sa-Kierra Hudson, working in the Haas School’s corporate governance group, teaches Berkeley’s Haas Core DEI course in the spring. It is the second iteration of the DEI course at Berkeley; Last year it was a two-day intensive workshop. “Now we’re stretching seven to eight weeks with the goal — at least that’s my goal — to make this a semester-long course,” Hudson says. P&Q.

The real goal, she added, is to move beyond the buzzword “DEI.”

“We all know DEI, it’s a buzz word, everybody uses it,” she says. “But I’m not 100 percent sure that everybody has the meat behind the word, then use it as a tool to flexibly say, ‘Hey, DEI.’ That’s enough, isn’t it?’

“We hope the course will make people realize: the air around us, the air we breathe, is not what we think is the same everywhere.” People live in places with air pollution. And if you don’t live in that place, you never think. Because not only do you not think about the air, but your air is also good. So it’s really about getting people to think like this: ‘Hey, let’s make sure the weather is good for everyone.’ “
