As times change, many things are not what they were years ago. Landline phones have been replaced by cell phones, layered files have been replaced by cloud storage. At the same time, the wedding industry has also undergone major changes. Today it’s all about new trends in the wedding business. The wedding industry has come a long way, from the time when the bride was asked to stay away from the camera to a completely proprietary invitation.

In South Asian weddings, invitations are not limited to beautiful cards in shiny envelopes. Many have chosen to take the green route and switch to e-invites. Aneesha Sajanani of MonINKA says, ‘People have become more budget conscious and eco-friendly in recent times. They are also now looking for digital options that can be customized and add a personal touch to their wedding celebrations.’

Anisha believes that while the trend of digital invitations is here to stay, it will have more to offer in the future. A cool trend I’d like to see is holographic wedding invitations, which involve creating a 3D animation on the invitation following the couple’s journey.’

Like ‘save the date’, bachelor and bachelorette parties have also increased in the last two years, mainly due to social media and western influence. The concept of brides and mehndi, sangeet or meon ceremonies were not given that much importance earlier, now it is the most elaborate and most awaited event of all. But pre-wedding shoots have also become the norm.

Pakistani photographer Izah Shaheen Malik, who covers South Asian weddings, finds them the most fascinating part of her job because it allows her and her team to get to know the couple on their actual wedding day. She says, ‘For the pre-wedding shoots, we hear and record the couple’s love story. As photographers and videographers, we discover their likes and dislikes, so it gives us direction on how to deliver their perfect wedding.’

Celebrity photographer, Amrit Arora of Wedding Files also feels that pre-wedding shoots are now on the rise and a trend to stay. However, it emphasizes how other wedding ceremonies have changed. Functions like mehndi or haldi are still considered intimate but their preparation is now equal. They bring something new and try to do things a little differently now.’ Amrit explained.

Izah admits that the bride doesn’t do much on the main day of the event, but the fact that mehendis are now the biggest ceremony gives the couple a chance to dance their hearts out and enjoy a beautiful journey together. Team PictroIzzah believes that many have turned to integration events as well. ‘Not everyone wants the typical three-day wedding event and post-Covid people are moving towards smaller, more detail-oriented events,’ they say.

One of the most important things when it comes to weddings is the decor, which has changed a lot from the past. The foil decorations that were popular in the 80s and 90s have now been replaced by elaborate floral arrangements, furnished, carpeted dance floors with large chandeliers and mirror work to reflect light, but it all depends on what the couple and their families want.

Wedding planner Sana Bhatti of Ayra Events explains, ‘Many clients want sophisticated decor. But some people demand a more elegantly refined and intricately detailed decoration.’

With the invitations sent, arrangements and decorations, the next step is the actual wedding. And to remember good memories, photographers and videographers are hired to cover the event. Naturally, one always wants the best in the business to capture beautiful moments. But the trend in wedding photography has changed a lot.

Amrit explains, ‘Clients now want more candidates and snapshots. It’s about some beauty and looks these days. They don’t want a basic, traditional shoot where everyone shows up, but instead want to cover the whole family in a moment and moment.’ He also says that the old days of tracking down more wedding albums and frames have now been replaced by soft copies and Instagram posts.

Social media is now a big motivator for many to choose a celebrity photographer and Izaza believes that many brides have gained organic followers on Instagram after asking photographers to share moments from their wedding and turn them into influencers.

‘Many of the brides my team and I have photographed have gone on to start their own businesses because of the popularity.’ Likewise, Amrit feels that many brides like to do things differently to stand out on the big portals and eventually get more views and likes.

Now that wedding scenes have gone viral, even video styles are changing. Drones are launched and wedding stories are taking center stage with loved ones’ testimonies and shots of the bride and groom getting ready to walk down the aisle. Amrit added, “Instead of having a complete cinematic film of the wedding, customers are more interested in 1-minute videos and reels for Instagram or TikTok. Traditional 2-hour-plus videos are getting out of the frame with each passing day.’

Despite that new reality, many in the photography and videography business continue to do the same things to stay relevant. But for Iza, loyalty to the customer and her business is paramount. A good wedding photographer thinks of new and creative ways to cover things rather than repeating the same thing everyone else is doing. That’s what makes them stand out.’

Trends are constantly changing but now e-invites, beauty decorations and short, cinematic video teasers are in style to capture the most important moments of wedding events. As time passes and technology moves to new heights, new trends are bound to emerge. Who knows, maybe live wedding coverage will be the new norm in 2050, just like the British royals, when TV stations seek exclusive rights.
