Mishawaka, Ind. (WNDU) – Mishawaka is asking for community input on ways to improve downtown.

They held a town hall Thursday night at the library on Lincolnway East in Mishawaka.

Inspire Mishawaka is working with other community partners to achieve Indiana’s Main Street accreditation.

This recognition opens up opportunities for grants and other funding so you can bring more activities to downtown.

“It’s focused on historic preservation. Developing businesses and the arts in our downtown…the city has done a wonderful job of doing that on its own. “We want to add a community-driven aspect where we can give back to the growth and vibrancy of our downtown,” said Bryan Tanner, president of Inspire Mishawaka.

This effort has been ongoing since 2018, and is out of a committee within the Mishawaka Chamber of Commerce.

“As the mayor said, and I have to agree, it’s the best hometown in America, and there’s a real sense of community pride. And emotionally … you can see that all of our public employees, our schools, our residents and our neighbors contribute to the community. Here’s how we can bring this together into a single effort. A brand we can stand behind for our city of Mishawaka,” said Tanner.

One of the city’s most popular events is the Third Thursday in Mish.

“We have arts, entertainment, employment opportunities and ways for our local downtown businesses to connect with more people,” Tanner said.

They want your opinion too.

“What motivates them? What do you want to see downtown? ” said Tanner.
