Students in our area are receiving more than academic support when they return to school.

“I actually had a few people ask me to check on you. And most of them were teachers. And she just burst into tears. You could tell she realized she wasn’t alone at that moment,” Jason said. Tate, CVUSD Safety Center Specialist

Coachella Valley High School is using its wellness center to equip students with a variety of exercises and tools to manage their mental health.

“We think about school, we think about getting grades and doing well in the classroom to prepare for college. But why is it important to invest in the mental health of these students?” News Channel 3’s Bianca Ventura asked Tate.

Tate replied, “Because we’re not robots? You know, everybody comes to school with a backpack, but there were actually two backpacks. One of them is the emotional baggage of their lives, what’s happening at home, what’s happening in their community.

Tate uses techniques such as sound bowls, aromatherapy and breathing exercises at the CVHS Wellness Center.

“It really helps to break down some walls so you can open up those walls and talk about what’s going on,” Tatt said.

And the work does not stop here. The Wellness Center works with other departments to support their students and direct them to a variety of resources.

“We have substance abuse counselors, and we have real therapists from the Latino Commission, the nurse’s office and campus safety who all play a big role. So we all come together under one roof of this intervention team,” he said. .

Lisette Santiago, CVUSD Community Engagement Manager. He said the security centers were requested on behalf of students and their families.

But we have seven health centers in our school district. This is a huge impact for our students, staff and community,” Santiago said.

Santiago also shares that CVSD has a student population that is about 98 percent Latino and Hispanic.

She hopes these health centers will help her overcome the stigma associated with seeking mental health help.
