One interesting aspect of this week’s showdown between the Texas Tech football team and the Houston Cougars is the number of former Red Raiders who will play key roles for the visitors. That only serves to add more fire to what could be a chippy contest.
Overall, three notable members of Houston’s roster, Casen Carter, Alex Hogan and Tazhaun Henry, started their careers in Lubbock and each will be looking to make a splash when they return to the 806.
Carter, an inside receiver, is perhaps the biggest loss of the three when he decides to go broke following the 2020 season. He showed great potential as a Red Raider following a 30-catch, 290-yard, 4-TD season in six games during a campaign shortened by Covid-19.
But since joining the Cougars, he’s been a bit of a player. He caught just 26 passes for 331 yards and no scores in nine games last year. And in Week 1 of this season, he mustered just three carries for ten yards against UTSA.
Meanwhile, Tazhaun Henry has joined the Cougars’ running backs. Now in his third season with the U of H program (he redshirted in 2020 due to NCAA transfer rules), he’s a viable threat out of the backfield.
He carried the ball 111 times for 524 yards and seven scores last year. He hauled in 20 passes for an additional 105 yards.
Ironically, the last time Tech and Houston squared off in Lubbock, it was Henry who had a big day on the floor for the Red Raiders. He rushed 24 times for 111 yards and four touchdowns and carried Tech to a 63-49 win. Now, he hopes to turn the tables in 2022.
Defenseman Alex Hogan has shown some serious promise in two seasons as a young Red Raider. In the year Accomplished with six combined touchdown passes in 2019 and 2020, he was a decent cornerback who struggled early in his career. He probably should have been asked to play earlier because of Tech’s lack of depth at that position.
In the year In 2021, Hogan had 27 tackles, two interceptions (one returned for a TD) and six pass breakups. He will be a key figure in Houston’s game plan this week as he runs a dangerous Texas Tech passing game.
All three of these players are Houston natives who are determined to get back on the field and represent their hometown team. Of course, all three will be looking to make a big impact when they return to Jones Stadium this weekend and try to upset their former school.
