Durham – Duke was unable to complete the comeback on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 23-20 overtime decision to Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
The Blue Devils scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to rally from a 20-6 deficit to 20-20 with eight seconds left in the game. Six of those 14 points came from the redshirt freshman. Sahmir Hagans An 81-yard punt was returned for a touchdown, Duke’s first since Jamison Crowder He did it against Arizona State in the 2014 Sun Bowl. In overtime, Duke drove the Yellow Jackets 37 yards down the field but missed a 52-yard attempt to force a second field goal.
Sophomore quarterback Riley Leonard He completed 20-of-42 passes for 136 yards and one touchdown. Georgia Tech counterpart Jeff Sims finished the night 23-34 for 227 yards and a score.
Junior wide receiver Jontavis Robertson He racked up a team-high 41 receiving yards on three catches.
Redshirt junior Dewayne Carter and graduate student Cam Dillon They each led the defense with nine tackles. Carter added one of five Duke losses in the tournament.
Redshirt junior Charlie Hamm He converted on two-of-three field goals of 28- and 45-yards.
How did it happen?
- Georgia Tech made a 22-yard field goal with 3:31 left in the opening frame to take a 3-0 edge.
- The home team added an 18-yard touchdown reception by Nate McCollum midway through the second quarter to extend their lead to 10-0.
- Duke converted Hamm’s first field goal of the night to cut the deficit to 10-3 with two minutes left in the half.
- Georgia Tech’s Sims connected with Leo Blackburn for a 37-yard touchdown on the first drive of the second half to extend the lead to 17-3.
- With a minute and a half to play in the third quarter, Ham converted the Blue Devils on another field goal to pull the visitors within 17-6.
- The Yellow Jackets responded with a 23-yard field goal of their own in an effort to build a 20-6 margin between the teams, the largest of the game.
- Duke would not go, scoring 14 points in the final six minutes to tie the score at 20-20.
- Hagans’ punt return started the rally before Leonard Jr. found the tight end Nicky Dalmolin He finally forced overtime from two yards out with eight seconds left to tie the game.
- Unfortunately, the Blue Devils failed to connect on a 52-yard field goal in overtime to return Georgia Tech’s 37-yard field goal.
