Early morning burn destroys long-term business

Kannapolis – Greendale Tropical Fish and Supplies in Mt. Mitchell was seriously injured in an early morning fire on Goldfish Road.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and officials have not yet released an estimate of the extent of the damage.
The initial alarm went out just before 7 a.m. and four alarms were received, from Mount Kannapolis, Coldwater, Rimer, Bostian Heights, Landis, China Grove, Atwell, Enochville, Rockwell Rural, Salisbury, MT. Pleasant, Cabarrus and Odell.
At one point, firefighters made an aerial attack on the fire from a ladder truck to extinguish the flames above the building and remove exterior walls.
Jeff Urie, who lives across the street and has been a local resident for 24 years, said he didn’t hear any sirens but woke up to the sound of fire engines pulling up.
“I looked outside and wondered what in the world had happened,” he said. Although he believed that the business had been there for 50 years, although he was not positive, but other neighbors and people commenting on social media said that they came there with their parents and grandparents, saying that the shop is a lifelong community. Firefighters at the scene said no one was home and no injuries were reported at the time of the fire, but it was not known if any animals survived. Officials said it could not be.
Yuri said that several years ago there was an effort to find a fire extinguisher in the area, because there is only one nearby, but it did not work.
“I don’t know why,” he said. Fire tankers were called in the morning.
Firefighters were on the scene as of midday.
