GREENVILLE, NC (WITN) – While many East Carolina businesses were closed for the holiday, some opened their doors for the first Labor Day since 2019 outside of Covid-19 restrictions.

After Saturday’s big game between East Carolina University and NC State, some residents decided to stay local instead of heading to the beach.

CrossFit Greenville wasn’t as busy as usual Monday due to the holiday, but instructor Zion Streeter said it was an improvement over last year.

“There were still a lot of people worrying about COVID and trying not to get sick,” Streeter recalls.

However, with fewer guidelines now, Streeter has seen more people enter than ever before.

“It’s great to see more people because it’s starting to show that we’re getting over the Covid season and things like that,” Streeter said.

Just down the road, the Texas Roadhouse was also open for the holidays, and was especially busy on Saturday after the Pirates vs. Wolfpack game.

“It seems like a lot of people are in town for the Labor Day holiday so we’re blessed with a lot of people, a lot of business,” manager David Hollinger said.

Another blessing Hollinger counts is staying in business during the pandemic.

When WITN contacted him this time last year, he had just 97 employees. Now he has about 120.

“We’re seeing a lot more diners and people feeling comfortable going out, so we seem to have more people working for us this year so we can serve more guests,” Hollinger said.

Other businesses that remained open on Monday included The Scullery and Sup Dogs.
