Now that Paris Fashion Week is over, we can officially declare Erykah Badu as the spring 2023 street style winner. The 51-year-old musician stood out after the show, and not just because she was safely in one of her signature hats. A big part of how Badu knocked it out of the park was its bold approach to footwear. Putting the spotlight first on her feet, she wore a truly innovative pair of ugly shoes to Thursday’s Rick Owens show. The pair, whose legs appear to have bright red tentacles, are courtesy of Maya Hasbani, a Central Saint Martins student who caught his eye as a teenager. (Technically, she classed them as “sea anemone” leg warmers rather than shoes.) It would be one of the many occasions she won the up-and-coming, not yet 21-year-old, a sweater to try out.
Badu accessorized with an oversized black jacket and a number of chunky bangles, which she confirmed in the video below. (She almost wears a top hat)
Just two hours later, Badu wore a new pair of statement shoes and went to see Ib Kamara for the first time outside of white. She also wore another large hat matched with a pair of knee-high boots that bore a slight resemblance to a tent.
The big tents were back on Friday as Badu made sure she had another collection of Maya Hasbanis in her wardrobe. She hit the road in a gray pair of casual gray track pants and another oversized hat.
After taking a brief break from the front row – which Badu revealed on her Instagram stories as part of her stay in Paris to record music – she returned to the spotlight, sporting Valentino’s signature color. Leave it to the hard-working pip who has been on the red carpet for several months to create a new sensation.
It ended up being the first of two hot pink Valentino looks. In the evening, Badu was seen stepping out in a slightly different shade of pink, again wearing a hat and coat that reached down to her toes.
The next day, Badu attended the season finale, which was entirely hosted by Tom Brown. At first, it looked like we’d never get to see her final shoe choice. But when she took off in a floor-length striped dress—paired with a gray blazer that draped over her shoulders—as she took the stage at the Opera National, we glimpsed a pair of platform heels. . A perfect choice for someone whose approach to fashion can be summed up as playful.
