EU regulators may require Google to sell part of its ad technology business.

(Reuters) – European Union antitrust regulators may order Alphabet Inc’s Google to sell part of its ad-tech business, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Monday.

Google’s dominance in online advertising has grown steadily over the past few years. Complaints from competitors about alleged anti-competitive practices have led to antitrust investigations into the practice on several continents.

The European Commission, which launched an investigation into Google’s ad technology operations in 2022, said at the time that it was concerned about Google’s presence at every level of the supply chain for online advertising.

Divorce orders from the EU’s competition authorities are rare. However, frustration is growing after Google’s failure to address competition concerns, the source said.

The commission and Google did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

The move was reported by the Wall Street Journal on Monday.
