Today, Hempstead Hall is filled with community members attending the Family Health Expo to learn about healthy living. What’s fun for them is that they can have a little fun and accept the rewards.
Hosted by the Hempstead County Wellness Alliance, the Expo attendees received items such as blood pressure screenings from Pafford and UAHT nursing students, (Pafford provided blood sugar screenings, as well as) vision and hearing screenings from Hope Public Schools, booster shots and vaccinations from Kabun Rural Health and more. Attendees also received educational information on a variety of healthy lifestyle topics, but in a fun way, many booths had giveaways, games, or hands-on activities to help convey information. For example, one of the booths from the University of Arkansas Office of Research and Extension had a black-light booth that customers could enter and display the amount of germs on their hands. Those reps had an exercise bike that mixed in a smoothie at the same time as they pedaled. Civita was about to surrender in a demonstration. The Hempstead County Health Department had a Jeopardy game with questions and answers about the dangers of vaping. During the youth session, the Women’s Committee of the Agriculture Bureau showed a life-size model cow and taught the children the proper milking process.
Booths are spread throughout Hempstead Hall as many health-related businesses and organizations come to participate in this community expo and make valuable contributions to promoting a healthy lifestyle. In addition to offering their services, all donated gifts and prizes: first aid kits, toys, pens, bags, mugs, hand sanitizer, chapstick, stickers, toothbrushes, books, games, snacks and more. . Hope Police Department Corporal Justin Dean from HPD handed out safety flyers and other prizes. In addition to providing information about their company, Child Care Aware allows customers to make their own fun toys. Arkansas Game and Fish and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were also on hand, teaching participants important safety information and handing out small shots. Exhibitor guests who visited each booth were entered into a drawing for a door prize.
Alliance Co-Chair Diana Gilbert (Hope Public Schools) said today’s expo is a great demonstration of the group’s mission. “Our goal was to bring all these health components together so people can access services and learn,” Gilbert said. “We also want to make it a fun event for the community so they can see that being healthy can be fun.” Co-Chair Diana Allen (Kindred at Home) further elaborated, “Events like these provide education to help children, seniors and people of all ages take control of their lives and stay healthy.
As Hempstead Hall begins to clean up at the end of the expo, guests can be seen leaving with goodie bags filled with goody smiles from the Hempstead County Wellness Alliance’s overall message and living health-related businesses and organizations. A healthy lifestyle can be fun and exciting!
