Finally it happened. I’m old enough to see my childhood trends resurrected and reimagined. The 90’s and Y2K had some pretty cool styles with their relaxed and fun, silhouettes and bright colors, while others were a total disaster and never came back.
Seeing these styles come back makes me want to try them again with a more sophisticated mindset because now I know what I like, what looks best on my body type, and I’ve learned a lot of tips and tricks from years of fashion school and working in the fashion industry. .
Below you’ll find the trends that are still “bomb” and the trends that I’m currently embracing and “like”.
‘Bomb’ category
Barbiecore: This trend is all about head to toe hot pink womenswear. Think Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie in the early 2000s. I’ll add this trend to a hot pink satin power dress with pearls and pumps.
Grandfather of the beach. This trend originated in the 2000s and is based on low-key styles on the beach. The best way to imagine this style is to think of Diane Keaton’s wardrobe in the movie “Something’s Gotta Give.” I love this trend because it’s effortlessly chic and comfortable. I recently bought a cream, knit, turtleneck top and knit tan shorts, which I paired with bronze Birkenstocks to embrace my inner beachy grandma.
Bottom jeans: I’m so glad to see this image come back. Not only is it flattering on many body types, but this style is more comfortable than skinny jeans! I love to decorate my bell bottoms with a classic fitted tee.
hair nails The 90s were filled with all kinds of hair accessories, including hairdos. Fast forward to 2022 and hair nails are back in different styles and materials. I wear white plastic fur nails around the house and pearl-embellished metal nails for climbing.
“like” category
Short dress: Alicia Silverstone In 1995 she showed off a lot of plaid minis in Clueless, every girl wants to rock a mini skirt. Although the trend is beautiful, as I am in my 30s, I will leave it to the high school students who think that the longer length is more suitable.
Low rise jeans To be honest, I never liked this trend because I felt it lacked sophistication.
Butterfly Clips: As I mentioned before, the 90s were filled with a lot of hair accessories, including combed hair ties, scrunchies, metal snap clips, hiragami, and butterfly clips. Butterfly clips were an obsession and being at home with three sisters we had hundreds of them. Although I love this trend, I believe they should be reserved for children.
Pre-style In the 90’s, Ralph Lauren introduced fashion trends, especially colorful polos. Paired with a chunky cardigan instead of polos, I’d opt to go with the classic Princess Diana white button-up.
