It was a big night for the big cats.
Passaic Tech, No. 14 in the NJ.com Top 20, was dominant in the trenches on both sides of the ball in a 21-3 road victory over Clifton (3-3) on Friday.
The Bulldogs (6-1) were dominant from the first whistle, with mismatched physical play that produced two rushing touchdowns from the Dye Twins and a fumble recovery in the end zone by senior Omar Kahok, who scored a ‘trash’ dunk.
“We call it big boy football,” said junior Travon Dye, who scored the game’s final score. “Our offensive line works hard day in and day out. Those people are dogs and that’s what we want. We are tech strong.
Trashon Dye added: “We’re just working to get better every week. “We have our best performance in practice.”
It’s Kahok’s first-career touchdown. He’s been practicing his dance of late, but the results came in a rush game—which he hadn’t practiced.
He saw it as a head-to-head moment to have Travon’s back on the rampage. Games like these have helped define the program’s season so far.
“These kids love the game of football,” head coach Matt Demarest said. “They play off each other. People doubted us because we had a little bump in the road, but we are a very good football team. Look at that offensive line and defense. We were flying off the ball,” he said.
When the Painters punted for two points, it was his teammate Cashmere Jones who picked up most of the yardage on the ground. The pacer ripped long runs after the first hit, setting up Dice to deliver the final blow.
Jones hasn’t been involved much earlier in the year, but he’s becoming a key cog for the offense as he comes out of the backfield explosively.
“I don’t think people understand how football season moves because you have different ideas every week,” Demarest said. “Jones is one of the best players in North Jersey, pound for pound. He’s a great change of pace. You can’t shake it all the time. You’ve got to pick up a little bit of speed and Cash is a great player.”
Contributing to the strong effort from the Bulldogs was a 12-7 loss to Ridgewood two weeks ago. Columbia lost its matchup against Passaic Tech last Friday, so this finally became a chance to put it in the rearview.
While the smell may be gone, the fire is still burning in the Passaic Tech locker room. With games around the corner, they love the football they’re playing and will feel good if they get another crack at the Maroons.
“That was a terrible loss,” Kahok said. “We just had a bad game. Two weeks later we went back and were hungry. It has yielded results. If we played them again, it would have gone differently.
