The Youth Mental Health First Aid course is a two-part course for anyone who has teenagers of their own, works with teens, or needs skills for the future. The courses are made possible through a gift from Fort Valley State University through Southern Choice Theory. It is divided into two sessions, and participants must attend both. Friday, September 16 and Friday, September 23 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Both will be held at Chambers at City Hall (700 Poplar Street).

MMHM co-ordinator Andrea Cook said: “Recognising the signs of mental health stress in our young people increases our chances of avoiding the trauma our young people experience. “Since this training is free of cost, the community at large will remove the barriers to supporting our youth!”

Andrea Cook and Jarvis Adside are providing the training, which includes:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
  • Common signs and symptoms of substance abuse problems;
  • How to deal with a child or teenager in trouble;
  • How to connect youth with help; And
  • Expanded content on trauma, substance abuse, self-care, and the impact of social media and bullying.

Suggested participants include teachers, school staff, coaches, camp counselors, youth group leaders, parents, and any adults who work with youth.
