Gigi Hadid won’t stand for Kanye West to attack one of her friends.
Following West’s Yeezy presentation at Paris Fashion Week, fashion editor and stylist Gabriela Carefa-Johnson – who was in attendance – shared her thoughts on the show on Instagram. She posted screenshots of messages she shared with friends on her Instagram stories that contained her concern for the West, wearing “White Lives Matter” costumes on the show.
West immediately began firing back at Carefa-Johnson, posting mocking comments to the editor. In posts that have since been deleted from his account, West has shared pictures of Karefa-Johnson, including one in which he claims Vogue Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour hates her shoes.
Continuing the thread, West shared a screenshot of a text message from someone urging him to “not insult that writer,” meaning Carefa-Johnson. West didn’t include a caption on the photo, but Hadid was quick to defend Karefa-Johnson, who she’s worked with in the past, including in March 2021. Vogue Cover.
“You’d love to have a percentage of her intelligence,” Hadid wrote. “Haha you have no idea….for any of your s— she might be the only person to be saved. The “honor” of being invited to your show should keep someone from giving their opinion. An opinion..? LOL. You are a bully and a joke.”
She went on to add to her Instagram story that Carefa-Johnson is “one of the most important voices” in the fashion industry and that she “could learn that shit.”
Carefa-Johnson shared another Instagram story on Monday evening, discussing her problems with the West show, writing, “No excuses, no art here. Sorry I didn’t make that clear – I thought I did. I did. If you ask Asb Kanyon, he says there is wisdom and revolution, all the things in that t-shirt.
She also called West’s shirts “incredibly irresponsible and dangerous” before calling for mercy for those who had experienced “horrific situations” in the room where he showed the collection.
Karefa-Johnson, who is currently a fashion director at Garagealso a contributor Vogue And this year’s BoF500 member, who initially shared a video from Yeezy’s performance on her Instagram story, wrote, “Here’s the bulls—” as she took in the show, saying, “It was crazy.”
A representative for Karefa-Johnson did not respond to a request for comment from People.
At Monday night’s event, West sparked controversy in a black long-sleeve tee with what the Anti-Defamation League called a “hateful slogan.” The design can be seen on full display when the designer speaks at the opening of the conference. Others, including senior creative director Tremaine Emory, have come to her defense in West’s attack on Carefa-Johnson. Not only did he post a photo of the stylist and editor on Instagram on Tuesday with the caption, “Beautiful,” but he also fired back at West for his comments.
Emory specifically called out the name of Virgil Abloh, a Western fashion designer, for playing the “victim campaign.”
“You’re so messed up. Get a virgin’s name out of your mouth… @gabriellak_j get your name out of your mouth… you’re not a victim, an insecure narcissist dying to be validated by the fashion world… be careful,” he wrote.
