ST. george – Utah’s governor and former Green Beret commander set the tone for the Lava Ridge Middle School Choir at an event planned to honor America.
The school choir sang “We Remember” about the 9/11 attacks before they were born during the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Hail to America” gathering at the Hilton Garden Inn in St. George on Friday.
The lyrics became Americans’ “One on Song,” and the song inspired speakers Colby Jenkins as well as Governor Spencer Cox, who fired back at prepared comments.
Taking the stage, Jenkins, a resident of St. George and CEO of School Pulse, a social and emotional learning platform, said the song is inspirational and continued with his motto, saying that the nation has forgotten who the enemies of the nation are united against. It is their enemy.

“It was good to see the values that I try to share,” Jenkins told the St. George News after his speech. “I’m not saying the world is bad, but there are very evil forces that want nothing more than to destroy America. So it’s important to remember what makes us strong, what makes us America.”
Jenkins also took time to brag about his daughter Olivia, who earlier this year became the first woman to be accepted from St. George’s to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.
After Jenkins spoke, Cox took the stage, noting that he changed his speech after the choir and Jenkins followed.
“This is a message that I hope every American and every classroom hears,” Cox told the crowd. He also cited what Swiss Ambassador Jacques Piteloud told him and other leaders during a recent trade mission about America being the hope of the world, but now it is no longer run as a “house divided” and needs a consensus to lead together.
