Rio Uribe is a name synonymous with high streetwear and youth culture. The venerable Gypsy Sport label rose to fame alongside the likes of Telfar, Hood by Air and Lore, and is worn by Hollywood celebrities, academies and cool kid surfers alike. For Spring/Summer 2023, Uribe celebrated the recently relaunched Los Angeles Fashion Week and Chicano culture with his latest take on Gypsy Sport.

Always on the cusp of representing diversity and individuality in his collections, Uribe’s new SS23 offerings featured men and women models of all shapes and sizes mixed with the inclusion of Latinx and bold clothing.

The GS ready-to-wear collection consisted of red, cream and white luxe flannel-style plaids, along with true blue and dark blue jeans, red sheer satin and crepe whites emblazoned with the “GS” planet logo. Women’s spaghetti-strap slip dresses, billowing tulles, cropped denim pieces and off-the-shoulder tops floated down the runway. While the sleek style is zoot-friendly, roomy skateboard shorts and large-waisted coats are included in the men’s offerings.

Also on the runway were several pairs of Gypsy Sports logo Nike Air Max sneakers in cranberry red and white.

Commenting on Gypsy Sport’s return to the runway, Uribe exclusively told Hypebeast: “I feel like there’s a fillip for fashion, art and music in LA, and people are paying more attention to LA than ever before. I’m from LA and have lived in New York for years, but now I’ve moved back home to LA to start a new chapter and grow my business here.

“This collection was really inspired by Chicano culture – from low riders to cholos, rock en Español, emo kids and the glam and disco queens. I wanted to show the dynamism of Latino culture,” added Uribe.

Further discovery of the Gypsy Sport label is available on the brand’s website.

Meanwhile, Maxwell Osbourne took his new label on the road for LA Fashion Week.
