FRANKLIN COUNTY, Maine (WABI) – Hannaford has announced a major donation to Franklin Community Health Network in Farmington.
A $350,000 donation will support Maine Health’s Food as Medicine program.
Provides one year of free support to Franklin County individuals with one or more chronic health conditions who have limited access to healthy foods.
The pilot program started in June this year and the healthy meals are mainly sourced from Good Shepherd.
Participants also get peer support with a health coach, goal setting, healthy cooking classes, recipes and menu planning.
The funds support a healthy meal program for Mainers who have recently been discharged from the hospital with certain heart disease diagnoses.
“The donations from Hannaford and Good Shepherd Food Bank are critical to this program. Health insurance does not currently pay for this type of program. So we’re using these dollars not only to pay for the food and rooms program, but also to evaluate whether it’s working because we think that eventually, maybe health insurance should pay for a program like this, especially if it works well. said Dr Dora Mills, Chief Health Improvement Officer at MainHealth.
Participants are referred to the program by health care providers.
