Paris, September 9, 2010 (FBC) The European Union’s executive body will begin a consultation on whether tech giants should shoulder some of the costs of Europe’s telecoms network by the end of the first quarter of 2023, EU industry chief Thierry Breton said on Friday.

European telecoms operators have long awaited financial contributions to U.S. tech companies such as Alphabet’s Google ( GOOGL.O ), Meta’s Facebook and Netflix ( NFLX.O ), which claim the lion’s share of internet traffic.

“In addition, we need to review whether the regulation is compatible with the ‘GAFAs’ (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon), for example, which use bandwidth and telecom operators,” Breton told reporters in French.

GAFA is a French acronym for the largest US tech companies, including Netflix.

He said this would be part of a broader consultation on a separate issue, or the so-called “fair share” of US tech companies in financing European telecoms and internet infrastructure.
