Phoenix (3 TV/CBS 5) – Did you know this? A recent Department of Agriculture study1 in 10 Americans do not have access to healthy food?
It may seem hard to believe, but given the rate of inflation, fewer people than ever can afford food for themselves and their families. During a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing in November 2021, an expert said the above. 100 million people in the US suffer from nutrition-related diseases and 90% of US health care costs come from chronic diseases. This can be helped in part by better nutrition.
To do its part, Instacart is launching a new initiative called Instacart Health to help individuals make informed decisions about their purchases, budgets and family needs. Here’s what the program includes:
- Healthy carts you can buy: Collections of products that can be purchased by professional health professionals
- Health accounts New item-level labels to help identify a variety of healthy products, from low-sodium to gluten-free to Keto and Paleo
- Inspirational Content: Featured rotating content banners — properly called “pop-ups” — on the app’s Home Food menu for vegan, low-sodium, and more options.
- Healthy Recipe Library: A collection of new recipes from women’s health, men’s health and prevention
With food insecurity on the rise and gas costs rising, many individuals are struggling to afford the necessities of life for their families. An estimated 34 million people in the United States are food insecure, according to the USDA study. Instacart has partnered with EBT SNAP and 70 other food retailers to bring assistance to families in need. In 2023, Instacart plans to partner with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
The company is offering Fresh Funds, a new product that allows employers, insurance companies, non-profits and others to buy healthy food from Instacart with digital allowances for products such as fresh produce. Later in the year, Instacart said it will offer a “Partnership for a Healthier America” program with a pilot starting in Indianapolis to expand further in 2023.
