South Bend, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish fell to No. 11 Georgia Tech in three sets (12-25, 23-25, 19-25) on Friday, September 30 at Purcell Pavilion. The Irish drop to 5-8 on the season when they host the Clemson Tigers at home on Sunday, Oct. 2.

Kailyn Winkler and Paris Thompson led the Irish with eight kills each, while Lauren Tarnoff finished with six kills and four blocks. Setter Phyona Schrader recorded 23 assists and 13 digs for the Irish.

After falling to the Yellow Jackets 25-12 in set one, the Irish would not go down without a fight in set two. It was a close set to start with the Irish trailing in the first by an 8-7 mark. Georgia Tech extended its lead to 14-8, but Notre Dame cut the gap to five at 17-12 and brought it within four at 18-14 after a Winkler kill and a Yellow Jacket error. The Irish brought it back to within 20-19 and after exchanging points it was tied 22-22. Despite a late effort by the Irish, the Yellow Jackets would take home two 25-23.

The Yellow Jackets held a one-point lead at 6-5 to start the third, but were able to extend the lead to 10-6. Notre Dame outscored the Yellow Jackets 6-3 to pull within one at 13-12, but Georgia Tech’s offense allowed them to take a 22-14 lead. The Irish closed the gap to five at 22-17, but the Yellow Jackets took the third and final set.
