Virginia Tech’s trip to Old Dominion on Friday is about to get worse.

After the Hokies lost 20-17 in Brent Pry’s first loss as head coach, players returned to the guest room to find items stolen from their lockers during the game.

Former Virginia Tech player Eric Kumah tweeted about the theft shortly after midnight Saturday morning, and the school responded Sunday, saying police are investigating.

“The Virginia Tech Athletic Department has confirmed that items were missing from the Virginia Tech locker room following Friday night’s football game against Old Dominion in Norfolk,” the statement read. “The university is working with law enforcement and Old Dominion University on the matter, and will have no further comment.”

The Hokies’ trip to Old Dominion was a comedy of errors. As ODU took a 10-7 lead into the game, Virginia Tech coaches were caught in a malfunctioning elevator and delayed their comeback in the second half.

As the game continued, the Hokies showed better performance and took a 17-13 lead in the last 3 minutes. But Hokies quarterback Grant Wells threw his third interception of the day with 2:58 left and the Monarchs marched 59 yards.

Virginia Tech had 20 first downs to ODU’s 13 in a 95-yard rout of Old Dominion, but five Hokies turnovers led to an upset for the Royals.

“They wanted to make plays, they wanted to play hard, but I think they were definitely pressured and stupid,” Pry said. “You want to make people find it, and we haven’t done that.”

It was the second embarrassing loss for the Hokies at ODU, Lost there 49-35 in 2018.

Virginia Tech is scheduled to play at Old Dominion in 2024, 2027, 2029 and 2031.
