Hawaii police have charged a 23-year-old Kailua-Kona man in connection with a series of shootings in the Kailua-Kona area early Tuesday morning.

At 4:56 a.m., Kona Patrol officers responded to a report of a break-in at a business located in the 75-5600 block of Copico Avenue. Responding officers determined cash had been removed from the business. Later, it was learned that neighboring businesses were broken into and money and other items were taken out of the business.
Later, around 9:30 a.m. that same day, officers responded to another business in the same area for another burglary. Employees of this business said a storage shed was broken into and tools were taken. While investigating the break-in, police said a separate business owner next door had also been broken into. The business owner reported cash was removed from the establishment.
Detectives were able to obtain video surveillance footage from several businesses in the area and identified the suspect as 23-year-old Kahuilakane Abraham-Young of Kailua-Kona. Officers searched the area and took Abraham-Young into custody on suspicion of second-degree robbery in the area.
Kona Patrol officers, assisted by a detective from the Area II Criminal Investigation Division, continue to investigate the break-in. During their search, items allegedly stolen from businesses and 3.4 grams of methamphetamine were found.
On Wednesday, after talks with the prosecutor’s office, Abraham-Young was charged with three counts of second-degree burglary and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and habitual property crime. A habitual property crime charge stems from a prior conviction for property crimes within the past ten years.
Abraham-Young made a preliminary appearance on Thursday and was released on supervised release in Kona District Court and ordered to return to court on April 6.
