AMBLER — Lansdale Catholic coach Dominic Di’Adonna called his first “payday” as the Crusaders cruised into the offseason for a 49-8 opening day win over visiting Mastbaum Vo-Tech.

“I think it’s a great start,” said LC quarterback Cole Meehan, who threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another. “I’m happy with this but we have a long season to go. It’s one down and I’m ready for the next one.”

The Crusaders needed just 34 total games to score 49 points in their second and third games. LC led 35-0 at home — enforcing the mercy rule — and moved the ball in waves down the Wissahickon field.

“I thought the offense ran really well today. I feel like it starts with the guys up front,” Meehan said. “Our O-line really had a day. The holes were huge. The guard was great, which helped me get receivers down the field and make reads.

Meehan completed 8 of 10 passes for 117 yards and two scores.

After a 30-yard bolt by Jakahi Streeter — rushing for 52 yards on four carries — made it 7-0 LC, Meehan connected with James Webb Jr. for a 26-yard TD and a 14-0 advantage. Less than six minutes into the contest.

Just before the end of the first quarter, Meehan rolled right and then back left for a 32-yard score and a 21-0 lead.

“The way we finished last year (1-10), working hard all winter, today was the first payday, the first of many.” It was a good team win,” DiDonna said. “Everybody pitched in, everybody had each other’s back, and we just kept moving together. We have a ways to go, but we’ve done what we can. Everyone played to their potential.”

An 8-yard scoring strike to Streeter and a five-yarder to Ian Gramlich ran the lead to 35-0 at the half and enforced the mercy rule after halftime.

With good blocking by Bobby Caruso (12) and good blocking by John Dang (55) and company, Lansdale Catholic’s Eddie Schlotter hit one of seven extra points on Mastbaum. Kev Hunter, Media News.

Eight different Crusaders carried the ball and six more intercepted passes.

LC’s defense was also impressive.

Josh Brown sacked Mastbaum quarterback Jovan Vega, Bobby Lombardo made a tackle at the line of scrimmage and Yeboa Cobbold had two passes.

Efrain Quiles (35 yards) and Nicholas O’Brien (22 yards) each scored a touchdown in the third quarter to make it 49-0. The visitors broke the deadlock with a four-yard TD pass from Vega to Hopkins with 4:13 to play.

LC heads to Ocean City High School (NJ) next weekend for a matchup against Boys Latin Charter at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Crusaders felt it was a business trip.

“We’re definitely ready for Boys Latin. We have a long week of practice, preparation, watching film, studying,” Meehan said. “We’re all in this together so I think the team will have fun next week.”
