Long Beach police are investigating another stabbing of an innocent bystander, two weeks after a man armed with a screwdriver attacked and stabbed several people to death at a playground.
The latest attack took place near the International Tower near Alamitos Beach. A man and his girlfriend confronted a stranger, shouting and threatening them, when they pulled out a weapon and stabbed the man in the chest.
Neighbors say it’s another example of how unsafe they feel in the city, and they want more done.
“I’m scared, I’m really scared,” Sandra Hernandez said.
Hernandez was shocked to hear the recent stabbing near Ocean Blvd Thursday, just 17 days after a gunman terrorized the playground, before at least two people were shot by police in Belmont Shores.
Police said the attack appeared to be unprovoked. Hernandez said she has seen these unconfirmed attacks go unreported.
Hernandez works at a gas station off PCH and Magnolia; There, she said, she was repeatedly threatened, assaulted and robbed.
“I’m at work. I have to worry about my safety, but I have to make sure my daughters come home safe,” Hernandez said.
Since September of last year, a man has been stabbed to death after a confrontation at a gay bar off Broadway.
A month later, a woman waiting for the bus was stabbed to death on Alamitos Beach by a man who stabbed several people before being caught. In each case, untouchable attacks.
After the playground attack in May, neighbors reported an increase in rowdy people roaming the streets and causing trouble.
“It’s a shame that this happened in our city,” said Long Beach resident Dave Sherlock.
Mayor Rex Richardson toured the playground after the attack, meeting with business districts and announcing quality-of-life groups that work with homeless and mentally challenged populations. But neighbors like Hernandez say it’s not enough.
“We see that nothing is done, so people are sweeping it up, like, OK next time, I’m just going to try and survive, hopefully nothing happens to me,” Hernandez said.
NCB4 reached out to the mayor’s office for comment but did not hear back.
Police continue to search for the suspect in this latest attack. They have not released a description of the suspect.
