Longtime Amazon execs retire; Madrona Venture Labs Partner Rises – GeekWire

Amazon has lost two longtime executives to retirement: Tom Taylor, senior vice president of Amazon Alexa, and Greg Zehr, president of Lab126. The company’s hardware engineering team is known for creating Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets and Echo smart speakers.

Insider first reported the news, and an Amazon spokesperson confirmed the departure. They are part of a larger series of recent departures among Amazon’s top leaders.

“Tom has been here for over 22 years and Greg has been here for almost 18 years – and we hope they are both enjoying their retirements,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement. “We have strong succession plans for all businesses and both positions have been filled with strong internal leaders for some time now.”

Taylor, who was part of Amazon’s senior management team (S-Team), started his career in Seller Services, Amazon Payments and Fulfillment by Amazon. Prior to that, Taylor was director of operations at K2 Sports and an engineer at Delphi Automotive Systems.

Zehr is best known as the creator of the Kindle, Amazon’s e-reader recently upgraded to a version that allows note-taking and annotation. He joined Amazon and founded Lab126 in 2004, three years before the Kindle was launched.

In a video posted on Amazon’s website, Zehr says he loves his job. “My passion is in inventing things that haven’t been done before, doing things that haven’t been done before,” he said. Zehr previously held senior engineering roles at Palm Computing, VA Linux and Apple. He was also responsible for developing the Astro Home robot.

Other key personnel changes in the Pacific Northwest technology industry include:

  • Maria HessPreviously a partner and head of development at Madrona Venture Labs, he is now head of startup programs at Amazon Web Services. She was a senior product manager at Amazon from 1999 to 2003.
  • Bookis worth He is now the Chief Technology Officer of Sella, an Italian resale platform based in Portland and Dallas. Worthy is based in Seattle.
