For Lumen Technologies, sustainability is an integral aspect of its mission and purpose as an organization. “Each year, we highlight the different ways our organization enables sustainability, including diversity, equity, inclusion, governance, environmental sustainability and our commitment to science-based targets,” says Murphy.
While sustainability is part of Lumen Technologies’ core operations, Murphy sees opportunities around the movement growing exponentially. “Our customers are increasingly focused on how they can use the capabilities we provide to access, analyze and act on data in ways that improve sustainable performance.”
“A low priority for many of our customers is now that they are setting their own targets for emissions reductions and working to understand how to collaborate with partners in the supply and value chain to achieve those targets. Our platform has become a critical role in driving these outcomes,” she said.
Lumen Technologies’ sustainability focus and efforts
With Lumen Technologies’ sustainability strategy – and the company’s ESG strategy in general – Murphy explains that the company has taken a “multi-level approach”. In this approach, unlocking sustainability through innovation and transparency are key principles.
“We know from our work in the industry that our infrastructure solutions are making significant progress in sustainability,” says Murphy. “This can be seen in the development of international relations and cooperation during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many businesses need those services to sustain their business, so we know our fiber platform plays an important role in sustainability.
Similar to fiber, Murphy highlights the significant benefits of moving applications to the cloud in terms of sustainability. “Running your IT infrastructure and operations with a cloud model allows you to better control data consumption and make your infrastructure optimization and management more sophisticated and robust.”
The next step from infrastructure solutions is to collaborate with companies to provide sustainable solutions linked to applications such as smart cities, with the aim of achieving a certain sustainable benefit.
“Examples could be using IoT and sensors to enable: reduced energy consumption in buildings; reduced water consumption in agriculture; or reduced waste in manufacturing processes. The solutions we are designing together with our partners and customers are key partners in sustainability,” explained Murphy.
“There are also strategic interventions that may not be directly related to our business, aspects we influence. These include the ability to support the decarbonisation of our energy systems through Industry 4.0 technologies such as AI to facilitate the use of renewable energy by addressing the ongoing challenges of disruption and storage.
“In these cases, there is a lot of collaboration that needs to be done with other companies. It is a great example of how technology can enable sustainability in various industries to support the digitalization of those platforms.
